Paphiopedilum delenatii

April 16, 2018 By A'na Sa'tara

A beautiful first bloom of a seedling from the cross of Paphiopedilum delenatii ‘Double header’ x ‘Fantastic Circle.’  We have four Paphiopedilum delenatii; this clone consistently produces the most subtly colored and symmetrically shaped flowers.  Like our other mottled leaf Paphiopedilum, it is an easy grower in the warm room, under LED grow lights.  This species tends to flower in March-April, but sometimes has another bloom in late summer as well.

The cultivar in the photographs below is 2N.  For comparison, the last photograph is a side-by-side with a 3N clone of Paphiopedilum delenatii.  While the 3N clone’s flower is certainly larger, the shape is much better on the smaller flower. The 3N plant is from the cross of ‘Pink Lady’ and ‘Deerwood’ AM/AOS (4N).

My vision to create orchid portraits emerged from my appreciation for the “whole orchid.”  So many photographs of orchids focus only on the flower.  But orchids are not flowers: they are entire plants and living beings.  Connect more deeply with the many dimensions of orchids …
